Homeschool Extras Summer Classes

Homeschool Extras provides extracurricular classes for homeschool families in NW Cape Coral. Here is a brief overview of what we offer in our Summer Session.

STEM: Battle Bots

In STEM: Battle Bots, students will design and build their own robotic vehicles using LEGO Technic parts, motors, and gears. Along the way, they’ll learn basic engineering concepts like movement, stability, and power as they test and improve their designs. Each class includes build time and challenges, leading up to friendly competitions where students can put their bots to the test.

Book Club

Join us for a fun and engaging book club based on Kate Messner’s books, How to Rescue an Otter and How to Rescue an Owl! This class blends reading, discussion, and creative projects in a way that keeps kids active and excited to learn. We will collect donations for CROW Wildlife Hospital on Sanibel. There will be an optional field trip to their Education Center the week after Summer Session.

Art: All Media

In Art: All Media, students will explore a variety of art materials and techniques as they create new projects each week. We’ll work with things like paint, drawing materials, mixed media, and more, giving students the chance to try different styles and approaches. This class encourages creativity and self-expression while helping students build confidence in their artwork.

Choir

In our choir class, students will learn and practice a selection of patriotic songs in a fun and encouraging group setting. Along the way, we’ll work on singing together, following rhythm, and building confidence. At the end of the session, students will have the opportunity to perform for residents at a local assisted living or nursing home, sharing music and bringing joy to others through their hard work.

STEM: Ball Run

In STEM: Ball Run, students will work together to design and build a large marble run using LEGO Technic pieces. As we build, students will explore concepts like gravity, speed, and momentum while testing and improving different sections of the run. Some parts may be inspired by LEGO GBC-style modules, including motorized lifts powered by LEGO hubs and motors to keep the balls moving through the system. This class focuses on teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on building as we create one big, connected run.

Kitchen Science

In Kitchen Science, we’ll explore science through simple experiments with food! Each week, students will mix, test, and observe as we dive into topics like chemical reactions, states of matter, and how ingredients work together. We’ll also do occasional taste tests as part of our experiments. Please note: this class is not allergy-friendly, as we will be using and tasting a variety of common food ingredients.

Spanish

Join us for a fun, summer-themed Spanish class where students will learn basic words and phrases through games, songs, and hands-on activities. Each week will explore topics like food, weather, travel, and everyday conversation, helping students build confidence while using Spanish in a relaxed and engaging environment. This class is perfect for beginners and focuses on making language learning enjoyable and interactive.

All-Access Lab

All-Access Lab is a self-directed, open-choice class led by Ryan and Katie. During this hour, students choose how they want to spend their time, exploring activities that match their interests and energy level. Options may include puzzles, building materials, crafts and coloring, creative challenges, logic games, board games, piano, crocheting, and life skills such as sewing and simple cooking. Teachers and aides will work with small groups, offering guidance and support along the way. This class is designed to expose students to a wide range of interests, helping them discover what they enjoy while building practical skills.

Minecraft LEGO Biomes

In Minecraft LEGO Biomes, students will build their own sections of a Minecraft-inspired world using LEGO bricks. Each student will create a different biome—such as forests, deserts, oceans, or caves—and then we’ll combine everyone’s builds into one large, connected world. This class focuses on creativity, planning, and hands-on building as students design and bring their biome to life.

Scratch Coding

In Scratch Coding, students will build on their existing Scratch skills as they create more complex projects. We’ll focus on game mechanics, variables, and organizing code for larger projects. This class is best for students who already have some experience with Scratch and are ready to take the next step, but newer Scratch users are welcome to join and learn along the way.

Build It

In Build It, students will take on fun, hands-on building challenges using a variety of materials like cardboard, paper, tape, and more. Each week, they’ll design, test, and improve their creations as they work through different engineering-style challenges. This class encourages creativity, problem-solving, and persistence as students learn that sometimes the best ideas come from trying, adjusting, and trying again.

All About Florida

In this 4-week class, students will explore what makes Florida unique—beyond the beaches and theme parks! We’ll learn about Florida’s history, geography, agriculture, and wildlife, including some lesser-known features like Florida’s caves and underground springs. Students will discover how farming plays a big role in our state, especially citrus, and we’ll even make our own freshly squeezed orange juice. With hands-on activities, fun discussions, and simple projects, this class is designed to give students a deeper look at the state they call home.
